UPL, a global provider of sustainable agricultural solutions, and CH4 Global have entered a strategic partnership to address methane emissions in the livestock industry. The agreement, spanning multiple years and phases, seeks to bring CH4 Global’s Methane Tamer, a seaweed-based feed additive, to millions of cattle daily. The initiative focuses on major livestock markets in India, Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay, which collectively account for over 40% of the global cattle population.

The collaboration aims to create targeted business models for the introduction and distribution of Methane Tamer in these regions. This approach is designed to help the livestock sector reduce its environmental footprint by adopting sustainable feed practices. Methane Tamer integrates into UPL’s existing feed formulations, leveraging the company’s established market presence, customer relationships, and distribution networks in these regions.

Methane Tamer: A Solution for Livestock Emissions

Methane Tamer is a stable feed supplement derived from whole Asparagopsis seaweed. Research indicates that when used as recommended, it can lower enteric methane emissions from cattle digestion by up to 90%. Enteric methane is a primary contributor to greenhouse gas emissions and represents the largest human-driven source of methane globally.

Methane Tamer is a range of animal feed supplements formulated with whole Asparagopsis seaweed, the most effective natural substance known for reducing enteric methane emissions. Methane Tamer Beef Feedlot, in particular, is designed to achieve a minimum 70% reduction in enteric methane emissions throughout its shelf life.

The key ingredient in Methane Tamer is whole Asparagopsis, a seaweed whose natural compounds inhibit the formation of methane gas during the digestive process in ruminant animals, a discovery first made by researchers in Australia. Dried, whole Asparagopsis has been proven to substantially reduce enteric methane emissions in beef cattle, dairy cows, and sheep, with no negative effects on livestock, their products, or the environment.

In addition to reducing methane emissions, Asparagopsis offers other advantages, including enhancing feed energy retention by reducing losses due to enteric fermentation.

Quality Matters: Not all Asparagopsis is created equal. Only seaweed that is cultivated, harvested, and processed according to our rigorous standards can deliver the full benefits of Methane Tamer.

More than Seaweed: Methane Tamer is customized for various animal types and farming operations, with specific formulations designed to improve effectiveness, palatability, and ease of application—because one solution doesn’t work for everyone.

Produced Sustainably: We are dedicated to manufacturing Methane Tamer with minimal environmental impact, using the CH4 Global EcoPark model to meet global demand through regional production.

Scaled for Greater Impact: As we grow Methane Tamer, we collaborate with climate-conscious leaders from diverse fields—including digital innovation, sustainable aquaculture, and ingredient processing—to maximize its positive impact.

Third-Party Verified Carbon Credentials: We are developing a carbon credit program, with verification from a leading carbon registry, to ensure we can pass on the benefits of proven methane reduction.

“Our OpenAg purpose places collaboration at the heart of progress, and through this partnership we aim to mark an important step in showing how agriculture can deliver on overall efforts to reduce greenhouse gasses. Methane is almost thirty times as harmful for global warming than CO2 and recent reports show the highest levels in 800,000 years, so its reduction must be our top priority. This initiative will present a new model for sustainable livestock which can be scaled globally, helping the industry reach net-zero for greenhouse gasses by adopting methane mitigation technologies, and demonstrating agriculture’s positive impact on the environment.”
Jai Shroff, Chairman and Group CEO, UPL
“We are thrilled to join forces with a market leader like UPL to accelerate the global adoption of Methane Tamer. UPL’s vast footprint across the key markets and its trusted relationships with farmers make them an ideal partner as we scale up to meet the massive need for enteric methane reduction solutions.”

Through this partnership, UPL and CH4 Global will work to demonstrate a scalable model for sustainable livestock management. By integrating methane mitigation technologies, the initiative strives to showcase agriculture’s potential to contribute positively to environmental sustainability and support the global net-zero emissions goal.
