The Indian Institute of Spices Research (IISR), Kozhikode, is set to organize an ideathon on February 19, 2025, as part of its ‘Rise Up 2.0’ Innovation and Entrepreneurship Conclave. The event aims to foster creative ideas and solutions to address various challenges in the spice industry, encouraging participants to develop innovative approaches to enhance efficiency, sustainability and productivity in the sector.

Rise Up 2.0’s Focus on Innovation and Problem-Solving

The Rise Up 2.0 ideathon will revolve around six key themes, each targeting a critical issue in spice production and processing. One of the primary areas of focus is the development of quick onsite tools for detecting pesticide residues and adulteration in both fresh and processed spices. Ensuring food safety and quality is a growing concern and efficient detection tools can help maintain consumer trust and meet regulatory standards.

Another challenge being addressed is the design of improved harvesting equipment for spices like black pepper, cinnamon and nutmeg. Mechanization in spice farming remains limited, and novel harvesting tools could improve efficiency and reduce labor dependency.

The Rise Up 2.0 ideathon will also explore the application of artificial intelligence in the early detection of insects, pests and diseases. AI-based monitoring tools can help farmers identify threats at an early stage, leading to timely interventions and better crop protection. Additionally, participants will be encouraged to propose solutions for managing the impact of chemical pesticides while also exploring ways to convert spice waste into valuable products.

The growing issue of human-wildlife conflict in agricultural regions is another critical theme. Strategies to mitigate such conflicts can help protect crops while ensuring the safety of both farmers and wildlife. Furthermore, the event will invite ideas for sustainable farming models in sloped areas, utilizing modern tools such as AI and drones to enhance productivity.

Aspiring entrepreneurs will have the opportunity to gain insights from industry experts and explore potential avenues for launching their ventures.
