Bill Gates, co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, met with Union Minister for Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare and Rural Development, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, at Krishi Bhawan in New Delhi to discuss expanding collaboration in agriculture, rural development, and technological innovation. The meeting focused on advancing digital agriculture, biotechnology, and climate-resilient farming, aiming to enhance productivity, empower rural communities, and foster sustainable farming practices.
The meeting underscored the shared commitment between India and the Gates Foundation to advance agricultural research, promote sustainable farming practices, and leverage emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance productivity and rural livelihoods.
Expanding Collaboration in Digital Agriculture and Innovation
Chouhan highlighted India’s ongoing efforts to integrate digital public infrastructure and precision agriculture technologies into farming practices, positioning innovation as a driving force for agricultural progress. He acknowledged the Gates Foundation’s support in providing technical expertise in areas like digital agriculture and agricultural credit, emphasizing the need to further deepen this collaboration.
Bill Gates praised India’s strides in agricultural research, recognizing the potential for these advancements to benefit other nations. He commended the country’s focus on developing climate-resilient and biofortified crop varieties, a field in which the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) has made notable progress, having developed over 2,900 crop varieties, with 85% designed to withstand changing climate conditions.
The potential for enhanced cooperation between ICAR and the Gates Foundation was a key point of discussion, particularly in advancing research on crop resilience and precision farming techniques. Bill Gates acknowledged the strategic importance of India’s work in sustainable farming and digital solutions, highlighting how these efforts could support global food security.
Women’s Empowerment and Rural Development in Focus
The dialogue also spotlighted India’s commitment to women’s empowerment through rural development initiatives. Chouhan spoke about how, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Livelihood Mission has evolved into a powerful movement for women’s empowerment, significantly improving the lives of women across rural India.
The Minister expressed gratitude for the Gates Foundation’s continued contributions, particularly during India’s G20 presidency, in supporting the Ministries of Agriculture and Rural Development. He acknowledged the Foundation’s broader efforts in improving health, nutrition, and poverty alleviation, areas that are closely linked to agricultural development and rural prosperity.
