MassChallenge, a global network supporting innovators addressing major global challenges, has entered into a strategic collaboration with the Food & Nutrition Innovation Institute at the Gerald J. and Dorothy R. Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University. The initiative aims to support innovation at the intersection of food, nutrition and health by enabling emerging startups to build solutions that contribute to sustainable food systems, precision nutrition and public health outcomes.
The partnership has been designed to leverage the complementary strengths of both organizations, combining MassChallenge’s entrepreneurial network and acceleration platform with Tufts University’s academic expertise and stakeholder ecosystem in nutrition science and policy. This joint effort is rooted in the recognition that the fields of food, health and agriculture are increasingly interdependent and require integrated approaches to solve systemic challenges.
Integrated Support Model for Startups
As part of this collaboration, startups participating in MassChallenge’s health and climate accelerators will gain access to a range of differentiated resources. This includes specialized research support, direct connections to faculty at the Friedman School and entry points into innovation networks that are focused on nutrition and food systems.
The collaboration also establishes food and nutrition innovation as a key thematic pillar within the MassChallenge accelerator programs. Focus areas include personalized and precision nutrition, sustainable agriculture practices and advancing nutrition equity. Startups selected within these categories will benefit from targeted programming, strategic guidance and increased visibility across both institutions’ platforms.

Active Role of the Food & Nutrition Innovation Institute
The Tufts’ Food & Nutrition Innovation Institute will play an active role in shaping and supporting the startups involved. This includes contributing expert judges to MassChallenge’s accelerator selection and evaluation processes, offering mentorship and subject matter guidance to relevant startups and inviting selected ventures to join its Food & Nutrition Innovation Council. The Council serves as a collaborative community comprising leaders from industry, non profits, academia and entrepreneurial ventures who are focused on advancing sciencemdriven innovations in the nutrition and food sectors.
Through this multi tiered engagement, startups will be positioned to refine their solutions in ways that are informed by scientific evidence, policy insights and real world implementation contexts.
“At a time when the lines between food, health and agriculture are rapidly converging, this collaboration represents a vital step forward. By aligning our resources and networks, we can help innovators deliver solutions with the potential to transform human and planetary health.”
Katie Stebbins, Executive Director of the Tufts’ Food & Nutrition Innovation Institute, emphasized the strategic fit between the organizations.
