Hartpury University and College officially inaugurated two new infrastructure developments, the Agricultural Engineering Workshops and the SMART Livestock Hub. The facility was upgraded with £1 million (US$ 1.27 million) allocated toward structural refurbishment and a further £1.5 million (US$ 1.905 million) invested in equipment procurement. These additions represent a key phase in the institution’s long term commitment to agriculture focused education and mark the continuation of an investment plan that has seen nearly £8 million allocated to agriculture related infrastructure and equipment since 2018.

The unveiling took place during an official ribbon cutting ceremony attended by senior stakeholders from across the agricultural and education sectors. The event was officiated by Charles Nicklin, Chief Executive Officer of The Institute of Agricultural Engineers. Nicklin, who brings 24 years of experience from his tenure at JCB, underscored Hartpury’s sustained engagement with the professional agricultural engineering community. His presence at the event highlighted the alignment of the institution’s academic offerings with evolving industry standards and occupational requirements.

Purpose Built Infrastructure to Support Technical Education

The newly refurbished Agricultural Engineering Workshops are designed to support the delivery of the T Level in Land Based Engineering, a technical qualification introduced to better prepare students for real world employment in agriculture and related sectors. Among the resources now available to students are a dynamometer for engine testing, advanced electronic diagnostic equipment and a full suite of cultivation and harvesting machinery. These tools are intended to give students direct experience with the types of systems and technologies used in contemporary agricultural operations.

The SMART Livestock Hub, launched in parallel, is aimed at enriching the academic experience for students pursuing T Level specialisms in both Livestock Production and Crop Production. The facility integrates advanced livestock monitoring systems and digital tools that mirror the ongoing changes in food production methods and animal welfare practices. Through access to such technologies, students will be able to understand and engage with data driven approaches that are increasingly shaping the management and sustainability of livestock farming.

Educational Strategy Informed by Industry Collaboration

At the launch event, the leadership team at Hartpury University and College spoke about the institution’s strategy to align its educational offerings with current and future skills demands at the local, regional, and national levels. Claire Whitworth, Deputy Principal of Hartpury College, stated that the curriculum is being developed in partnership with employers to ensure that students graduate with industry relevant skills and competencies. She highlighted the role of the new facilities in helping students build the technical expertise and practical confidence necessary to operate effectively in a sector that is undergoing rapid technological evolution.

“Our curriculum is designed in partnership with employers to ensure students leave Hartpury ready to make a meaningful impact. These new facilities will allow learners to develop the technical skills and confidence needed to thrive in a rapidly evolving agricultural landscape.”

The enhancements are seen as a response to the growing need for educational institutions to supply a workforce capable of adapting to technological advancements in agriculture, including precision farming, digital livestock management, and automated machinery.

Multi Stakeholder Funding and Strategic Partnerships

The development of the workshops and SMART Hub was made possible through financial support from multiple sources. The Department for Education and the Local Skills Improvement Fund (LSIF) played central roles in funding the project. Additional backing came from individuals such as Niel Curwen, a former Hartpury student and long serving governor, whose personal contributions supported the institution’s ambitions. The project also received institutional and strategic support from Business West and SGS College, the latter serving as the lead partner in the Gloucestershire LSIF bid. These partnerships illustrate the collaborative nature of the initiative and the broader sectoral effort to modernise agricultural education.

Hartpury University and College acknowledged the ongoing contributions of numerous industry partners who have remained actively involved in shaping the student experience. This input has ensured that the curriculum and training methods reflect the latest trends, tools and expectations from employers in the sector.

Student Impact and National Recognition

Currently, nearly 600 students are enrolled in agriculture related programmes across both the university and the college. The new infrastructure is expected to directly benefit these students by improving their exposure to advanced technologies and enhancing their hands on training. The expanded facilities are intended to create a more integrated and applied learning environment, helping students transition more effectively from education into employment within sectors that are central to national food production, rural development and environmental resilience.

The institution’s broader efforts in skill development were recently recognised by Ofsted during its 2024 inspection. Hartpury College received the highest possible rating for ‘meeting skills needs’ and retained its overall Outstanding status. This recognition underscores the role of these investments in not only expanding technical capacity but also aligning academic delivery with workforce requirements.

Through the launch of the Agricultural Engineering Workshops and the SMART Livestock Hub, Hartpury University and College has expanded its infrastructure to support the next generation of agricultural professionals, with a focus on technical education, digital literacy and applied learning.
