BioConsortia, a Davis (California) based microbial science company, has announced the successful closure of a US$ 15 million internal funding round. The new capital will be used to accelerate the commercial launch of Always-N, BioConsortia’s nitrogen fixing biofertilizer for industrial corn production, and expand the company’s microbial discovery and development operations at its Davis headquarters.
The financing comes from its long standing investors, led by Otter Capital and affiliated funds, and marks the latest in a series of recurring investments that now total US$ 95 million.
“This investment, one in a series of recurring financings from our internal investors, reflects their deep confidence in BioConsortia’s science, strategy, and commercial momentum,” said Marcus Meadows-Smith, Chief Executive Officer of BioConsortia. The company describes this milestone as a pivotal moment in its operational journey, with the fresh funding acting as a catalyst for its next phase of growth.
Always-N Targets Environmental Impact of Synthetic Nitrogen Fertilizers
At the heart of BioConsortia’s product pipeline is Always-N, a seed treatment biofertilizer that enables farmers to maintain crop yields while reducing reliance on synthetic nitrogen fertilizers. Nitrogen is a critical input in modern agriculture, but synthetic fertilizers are known for their negative environmental impact. Around 50 percent of the nitrogen applied to crops is not absorbed and instead escapes into the environment, either leaching into waterways or breaking down into nitrous oxide, a greenhouse gas that is 300 times more potent than carbon dioxide.
Always-N is designed to address this inefficiency. Delivered as a seed treatment, the product uses gene edited microbes to fix atmospheric nitrogen and make it available to plants. Its performance has been validated in the field, with the company reporting consistent results across multiple environments. The product also features an extended shelf life of over two years, which BioConsortia attributes to its integrated research platform combining microbial optimization and gene editing capabilities.
“Synthetic nitrogen fertilizers are essential to modern agriculture, but their overuse comes at a steep environmental cost. With Always-N, we offer a powerful, sustainable alternative, backed by cutting edge science and built for real world performance.”
New Funding to Support Manufacturing, Inventory, and Market Entry
The recent funding round is expected to help BioConsortia scale its manufacturing capacity, build product inventory, and expand market access in anticipation of the upcoming growing season. The company plans to leverage global partnerships to accelerate commercial entry into new regions, with The Mosaic Company playing a key role in supporting the product’s rollout across the Americas, particularly in row crop markets.
Always-N was commercially launched in New Zealand in 2024, where it demonstrated field readiness and commercial viability. Following this initial debut, BioConsortia is now preparing for a broader global market entry, aligning its production and supply chain infrastructure to meet anticipated demand.

Advanced Discovery Platform Powers Always-N and Product Pipeline
Always-N is the result of BioConsortia’s proprietary research platform, which integrates advanced tools for microbial selection, gene editing, and product development. The company’s approach begins with Advanced Microbial Selection (AMS), a process used to identify plant associated microbes that show strong performance characteristics. These microbes are then subjected to further optimization using BioConsortia’s GenExpress and GenePro tools, which are engineered to enhance key traits such as nitrogen fixation, pest resistance, and extended shelf life.
This discovery and development engine not only supports the production of Always-N but also fuels a broader pipeline of biological agricultural solutions. BioConsortia is currently advancing next generation biostimulants, fungicides, nematicides, and insecticides, each developed for ease of use, storage stability, and consistent field efficacy. These products are being designed to offer growers viable alternatives to synthetic chemical treatments and to help meet emerging standards in sustainable agriculture.
Proven Track Record in Field Trials
Founded in 2014, BioConsortia has established a strong foundation in agricultural microbial science. Its products have been validated through rigorous field testing across a wide range of crops, geographic regions, and soil conditions. The company reports that its microbial biofertilizers, fungicides, nematicides, and insecticides have consistently delivered strong results, providing growers with new tools to drive productivity while adhering to environmentally responsible farming practices.
With Always-N now entering its next phase of commercial deployment and a robust product pipeline in place, BioConsortia is positioning itself to meet growing global demand for sustainable agricultural inputs. The company’s internal investors remain firmly committed to its long term vision, underscoring continued support for science based solutions in the evolving landscape of global agriculture.
