Action for Social Advancement (ASA), a non-profit organization promoting sustainable livelihoods for Indian farmers, in collaboration with American retail giant Walmart Foundation has launched phase two of their farmer empowerment program in Madhya Pradesh. The project aims to enhance agriculture value chains by improving natural resource management, and facilitate growth of community institutions for economic viability. The initiative will focus on 35,000 smallholder farmers in Madhya Pradesh, with a particular focus on tribal communities.

For the second phase, ASA will expand its efforts across three areas, agriculture value chain development, sustainable farming, and institution building at the grassroots level. The project is designed to bring 75,000 hectares under regenerative land use, increase crop intensity from 124% to 200%, and expand FPO membership from 7,800 to 13,500. ASA will also mobilize US $1.93 million in working capital to strengthen long term resilience for small scale farmers.

ASA Strengthening FPOs for Inclusive Growth

The new phase builds on the success of the first phase, which enabled the establishment of seven Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs), facilitated trading of over 70,000 quintals of crops, and trained more than 30,000 farmers in vegetable cultivation, agroforestry, and other sustainable techniques.

Our initiative is a testament to the power of collaboration in transforming rural livelihoods. By empowering farmers with sustainable practices and market access, we are not just improving lives today but creating opportunities for future generations

Under this program, ASA helped the credit issuance of US $963,855 from Ploughman Agro Private Limited and supported 10,500 farmers adopt water management practices. The project increased farmer incomes by 25–30%, while FPOs achieved record turnovers ranging from US $542,000 to $723,000. This helped FPOs expand their reach in aggregating produce, improving market access, and providing value added services for their members.

Addressing Agricultural and Environmental Challenges

ASA was founded in 1996 to promote farm-based livelihoods for smallholder farmers through its Livelihood Enhancement Model. This model seeks to harmonize people, nature, and the economy by empowering farmers from marginalised farmers communities secure livelihood security and self sufficiency. The organisation has operations expanding eight states and a team of more than 350 professionals.

The organisation primarily focuses on addressing critical agricultural and environmental challenges such as excessive use of chemical fertilizers, poor land productivity, high soil erosion, undulating topography, deforestation and land degradation, water scarcity and mismanagement, unsustainable agricultural practices, climate change impacts, and a lack of awareness about sustainable farming methods.

The organisation has been credited with the construction of thousands of water harvesting structures, that includes stop dams, farm ponds, and dug wells for irrigation. ASA initiatives have reached over 700,000 families in thousands of villages across several Indian states. It also works with Self Help Groups (SHGs) to collectivize the bargaining power for marginalised farmers by improving their access to credit and markets, and fostering community ownership.

ASA aligns its strategies and interventions with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to enhance the impact of its programs. The organisation follows a three step process, understanding the SDGs, identifying areas where its initiatives contribute to these goals, and prioritizing the SDGs most closely aligned with its organizational objectives.
