Hornet Solar Expands Agrivoltaics with Sheep Grazing Initiative in Texas

Hornet Solar, one of the largest solar projects in the United States, has launched a large scale sheep grazing program across its 3,900 acre site in Swisher County, Texas. Eleven guardian dogs, comprising Great Pyrenees, Anatolian Shepherds, and Akbash breeds, are deployed across the site to protect the flock.

Hornet Solar employs bifacial photovoltaic modules mounted on a single axis tracking system, connected to Oncor Electric’s 345kV transmission system within the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT). The design enables optimized energy capture while maintaining compatibility with existing land uses.

The project stands as an example of collaboration between developers, local officials, landowners, and community stakeholders, focusing on shared long term benefits. Over its operational lifetime, Hornet Solar is projected to contribute more than US$ 100 million in new tax revenue to Swisher County, directly supporting the local school district, hospital, and public facilities.

By preserving the agricultural character of Swisher County, the project enables landowners to maintain their land for future generations.
