Farmblox, a farm automation platform, has announced the launch of its new security product line, COP-R-LOCK, developed in partnership with ag crime expert Bobby Rader. The system is designed to combat the theft of essential farm resources such as copper wire, irrigation pumps, and fencing, issues that have increasingly burdened farmers, insurers, and the broader agricultural economy.
Agricultural crime is estimated to cost the US nearly $5 billion annually in equipment damage alone. In California’s Tulare County, from January to September 2025, reported losses from agricultural theft surpassed $1 million. Theft of copper wire disrupts operations, leaving irrigation systems and other farm equipment inoperable. For growers operating in remote areas with limited connectivity and minimal law enforcement presence, detection and response have become critical challenges. Farmblox’s COP-R-LOCK system aims to addresses this gap by integrating advanced sensors capable of providing real-time alerts, even in low-connectivity environments.
Real Time Protection for Farmers
The COP-R-LOCK security system utilizes Farmblox’s established automation platform, which monitors environmental and equipment conditions to detect tampering or damage. It can be deployed across a variety of crop types and terrains, including orchards, vineyards, row crops, maple, and other specialty crops. The system sends instant alerts to growers when theft attempts are detected, helping to reduce downtime, repair costs, and potential crop loss caused by interrupted irrigation.
Farmblox reports that theft-related equipment repairs can cost between $20,000 and $90,000, while associated losses from downtime, emergency repairs, and labor further compound the financial strain. With copper theft increasing by 22% year over year across the United States, the company positions COP-R-LOCK as a proactive measure to prevent recurring losses that often exceed the cost of prevention itself.
With this new system, we’re giving growers the ability to know what’s happening on their land at all times and potentially prevent damage to valuable equipment, no matter how far-flung or off-grid their operation may be.
Collaboration With Ag Crime Expert Bobby Rader
The development of COP-R-LOCK stems from a collaboration between Farmblox and Bobby Rader, a veteran law enforcement officer who has spent over 15 years specializing in agricultural crime prevention. Rader, who has overseen thousands of ag crime investigations, emphasized the persistent lack of effective tools available to farmers and law enforcement agencies.
“I have conducted and overseen thousands of criminal investigations regarding ag crime,” said Rader. “Fundamentally, farmers and law enforcement lack the tools and innovation to fight back and protect vital equipment and infrastructure. This partnership with Farmblox offers new and innovative tools that will absolutely create positive change for the future of ag security.”
Rader currently leads one of the most advanced agricultural crime task forces in the world, based in California’s Central Valley. His expertise informed the design and deployment of COP-R-LOCK, ensuring it aligns with practical needs on the ground and law enforcement protocols for incident response.
From Real-World Incidents to System Innovation
The idea for COP-R-LOCK emerged after a Central Valley grower suffered a copper wire theft exceeding $100,000 in damages the day before a scheduled meeting with Farmblox. The grower sought a technological solution to prevent such losses, which led Farmblox to explore theft prevention as an integral component of its automation platform.

“Copper theft, fence theft, and other forms of agricultural theft can cost growers up to $100,000 in damages and repairs to expensive equipment,” the company stated. “We met Bobby Rader along the way, who was independently working to solve the same problem, and together we developed a solution that allows growers to fight back.”
Features and Future Integration
COP-R-LOCK combines sensor-based monitoring with multi-layered alert mechanisms that detect tampering, pinpoint the exact location of theft attempts, and activate on-site alarms to deter criminals. The system is being developed to include automatic law enforcement notifications for faster response times.
The modular architecture of COP-R-LOCK allows it to integrate seamlessly with other Farmblox solutions. Farmers can protect electrical systems, fencing, wind machines, and chemical or fertilizer tanks using corresponding sensor modules. Each subsystem detects specific tampering or damage events, such as conduit breaches, fence cuts, or irregular fluid levels, ensuring continuous protection of infrastructure and assets.
Farmblox is currently piloting COP-R-LOCK with large-acreage growers across California’s Central Valley. The company is also in discussions with major insurance providers to offer premium discounts for customers who install the system, recognizing its potential to reduce claims related to agricultural theft. A broader commercial rollout is anticipated later this year.
A New Chapter in Farm Security
As theft incidents continue to rise, Farmblox’s COP-R-LOCK initiative underscores a growing need for proactive agricultural security measures. By combining field-proven automation technology with insights from ag crime enforcement, the system aims to equip farmers with real-time visibility and control over their assets.
For growers facing increasing losses from theft, the system represents an opportunity to protect not only their equipment and property but also the stability of their operations and peace of mind.
