DCM Shriram, Bayer Partner to Strengthen India’s Agricultural Value Chain

Indian business conglomerate DCM Shriram and crop solutions company, Bayer Crop Science, have signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to jointly explore opportunities that advance India’s agriculture ecosystem, focusing on innovation, sustainability, and farmer-centric solutions.

The companies will focus on devising comprehensive crop solutions, including seeds, specialty plant nutrition, biologicals, agri-inputs, and digital advisory platforms. The partnership aims to develop innovative, sustainability focused, and farmer-centric solutions to strengthen the country’s agriculture ecosystem.

With this partnership, Bayer and DCM Shriram can enhance market access, strengthen value-chain connections, and help farmers tap into emerging opportunities. Our combined and complementary expertise enables us to scale solutions quickly and create lasting positive change

The collaboration also seeks to strengthen agricultural value chains and assess potential partnership opportunities within specific segments of the chemicals business.

Providing Long Term Value

DCM Shriram has been expanding its work in crop inputs and on-farm support through its Shriram Farm Solutions division. The company operates regional agronomy centres that offer farmers practical guidance on seed selection, nutrition and crop protection based on local conditions. It has also invested in facilities that analyse soil and plant samples to help identify nutrient gaps and improve fertiliser use.

Bayer Crop Science continues to work with smallholder farmers through field partnerships and training programmes across rice, cotton, corn and vegetable crops. Through initiatives such as the Better Life Farming Alliance, the company collaborates with local organisations to improve access to agronomy advice, crop inputs and market linkages for rural growers.

The two companies will also explore opportunities to jointly support farmer organisations and strengthen sustainable agriculture initiatives, including pilots in soil health, carbon sequestration, and integrated crop management.

Ajay S Shriram, Chairman and Senior Managing Director, and Vikram S. Shriram, Vice Chairman and Managing Director, DCM Shriram Ltd, stated that they are delighted to partner with Bayer to explore new avenues that can benefit India’s farming communities. By bringing together complementary strengths, they aim to support sustainable and productive agriculture while creating long-term value for farmers and the wider ecosystem.

Beyond crop inputs, DCM Shriram runs community water-management projects in parts of Rajasthan and supports sugarcane growers in Uttar Pradesh with training on more efficient farming practices. These ongoing programmes reflect a broader effort to address soil health, input efficiency and day to day decision making on farms, which aligns with several themes highlighted in the MoU.

Bayer is also developing digital tools that use field data, remote sensing and weather information to support timely decisions on planting, spraying and harvesting. These tools are being tested and adapted to different growing environments with the aim of improving resource use and reducing crop losses.

Aligning Field Reach with Soultions

Indian agriculture is entering a phase where resilience and value-chain integration will define long-term success. The MoU brings together DCM Shriram’s field presence and farmer networks with Bayer’s research capabilities and digital agriculture work. Both companies have been running projects aimed at improving crop management and resilience, and the collaboration is intended to build on that existing groundwork.

By combining Bayer’s portfolio in advanced agricultural solutions with DCM Shriram’s rural footprint and integrated agri-business capabilities, the partnership can enhance farmer livelihoods, improve productivity, and promote climate-resilient farming practices.

The DCM Shriram-Bayer MoU reflects a broader shift in India’s agriculture sector toward value-chain strengthening rather than isolated farm-level interventions. Both companies bring different parts of the puzzle, DCM Shriram’s on-ground farmer networks and advisory centres, and Bayer’s research capabilities and digital tools.

The collaboration signals growing recognition that sustainability hinges on soil health, efficient input use and better market linkages, not only new products. By combining field access with technology and data, the partnership aims to address structural gaps in India’s agri value chain, especially for smallholders navigating climate variability and rising production risks.
