Food and beverage giant, PepsiCo, has completed the acquisition of Australian seed potato producer Dowling AgriTech (DAT) as part of its broader strategy to reinforce partnerships with growers, ensure secure seed supply, and enhance innovation across the Asia-Pacific agriculture sector. The move marks a deepened investment in the region’s agriculture value chain and aligns with PepsiCo’s long term goals of sustainable growth and resilience.
Strengthening Regional Agronomy and Seed Security
In Australia, PepsiCo produces snack brands under Smith’s and Red Rock Deli, while globally, it owns Lay’s. The acquisition of DAT, PepsiCo Australia’s primary seed potato supplier for over two decades, will support the company’s rollout of a long term sustainable agronomy strategy across the region.
DAT is recognized for its robust seed variety pipeline, established relationships with growers, and strong agronomic capabilities. Integrating these strengths will allow PepsiCo to enhance its seed potato operations and better support growers throughout the Asia-Pacific region.
According to Colin Matthews, Supply Chain Senior Director for PepsiCo APAC, “This acquisition allows PepsiCo to play a more purposeful role in the seed potato ecosystem, as a long term partner of choice for seed and chipstock growers in the Asia-Pacific region. By integrating DAT’s capabilities and expertise, we can help secure seed supply and bring innovation to the agriculture sector.”
Operational Management and Future Investments
PepsiCo’s APAC Agronomy Team will manage the operations of Dowling AgriTech and has outlined plans to invest in the facility to expand its production capacity. The upgraded infrastructure will support the supply of high quality seed potatoes for both domestic and international markets, reinforcing company’s commitment to sustainable sourcing and agricultural development.
For Dowling AgriTech, the acquisition marks continuity and growth. Ben Dowling, Director at DAT, stated, “This is a great outcome for DAT. It’s business as usual in all respects, yet we’re now part of a global food and beverage company, with a high capacity to drive the business forward.”

Dowling added that the company’s mission, to produce high quality seed that allows each potato variety to reach its full genetic potential, remains unchanged. “PepsiCo is a strong believer in this, and we see strong alignment in intentions and capabilities as we move forward,” he said.
The partnership is expected to create new opportunities for knowledge sharing between company’s global agronomy network and DAT’s specialized expertise, enabling the development of improved potato varieties adapted to local growing conditions and climatic challenges.
Strategic Rationale and Industry Impact
The acquisition highlights PepsiCo’s commitment to sustainable agricultural development and its ongoing efforts to build resilience in the supply chain. By integrating DAT’s technical know how and long standing grower relationships, company aims to ensure a steady seed supply while accelerating innovation across the potato value chain.
In an increasingly volatile agri-input market, where climate variability and supply disruptions affect production cycles, the acquisition strengthens company’s ability to maintain quality, traceability, and self reliance in its seed sourcing. The move also aligns with PepsiCo’s Positive Agriculture agenda, which focuses on improving soil health, water efficiency, and farmer livelihoods through sustainable practices.
For PepsiCo, this transaction represents a strategic step toward building a resilient and efficient seed potato ecosystem across the Asia-Pacific region. It enhances the company’s capacity to support local growers with access to improved varieties and agronomic guidance, while creating long term value for both the farming community and the business.
As PepsiCo continues to invest in agronomy and agricultural infrastructure, the inclusion of Dowling AgriTech within its global operations positions the company to further strengthen its agricultural foundation, reinforce sustainable production systems, and contribute to the evolution of modern potato farming across the region.
