Nishant Kanodia Joins International Fertilizer Association Board

At the International Fertilizer Association’s (IFA) Annual Conference 2025 held in Monaco, Nishant Kanodia, Chairman and Promoter of Matix Fertilisers and Chemicals Limited, was formally inducted into the Board of Directors of the IFA. The conference, which carried the theme “Investing in the Future of Food,” brought together key stakeholders from the global fertilizer sector, government bodies, and research organizations. Kanodia’s inclusion on the board reflects the growing recognition of India’s role in shaping global agricultural practices and addressing food security challenges.

A Global Forum With Roots in Local Challenges

Established in 1927, the IFA represents around 500 member organizations from over 80 countries. Its members span the fertilizer production and supply chain—producers, traders, distributors, service providers, research institutions, and even non-governmental organizations. With this wide representation, the association focuses on policies and practices that promote the responsible and efficient use of plant nutrients, which are essential to both agricultural productivity and environmental stewardship.

Alzbeta Klein, CEO and Director General of the IFA, expressed her optimism regarding Kanodia’s appointment. Her remarks underscore India’s emergence as a major player in global agricultural discourse, not just as a consumer or importer but also as a thought leader and contributor to sustainable practices.

“We are delighted to welcome Mr. Nishant Kanodia to the IFA Board. India’s pivotal role in global agriculture, together with Mr. Kanodia’s visionary leadership, will be instrumental in advancing IFA’s mission for sustainable, resilient food systems worldwide.”

India’s Shifting Role in Global Agriculture

India’s agricultural journey over the decades provides crucial context for this development. Once grappling with food shortages in the mid-20th century, the country has since grown into one of the world’s top producers of rice, wheat, pulses, fruits, and vegetables. This transition has not been accidental—it has come through policy reforms, adoption of better farming techniques, nutrient management strategies, and broader farmer participation.

This growing competence in agriculture has made India not just self-reliant in several key crops but also a country increasingly looked at for guidance in global food systems. In this context, Kanodia’s position on the IFA board is not just a personal milestone but also a nod to the country’s larger contributions to international food security.

A Personal Commitment to Agricultural Development

Speaking on his appointment, Kanodia highlighted both the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. Kanodia brings to the table not only industry experience but also a track record of overseeing one of India’s fast-growing fertilizer companies. Under his leadership, Matix Fertilisers has seen significant growth in both production capacity and market presence, particularly in Eastern India.

“It is a privilege to join the IFA Board at a time when India is increasingly central to global food security. The need for balanced nutrient management and innovation-driven growth has never been greater. I look forward to supporting IFA’s efforts to empower farmers, protect ecosystems, and enhance productivity globally and in India.”

Matix Fertilisers’ Steady Footprint in Eastern India

Headquartered in India, Matix Fertilisers and Chemicals Limited is a relatively young player in the crop nutrition sector but has made notable progress in a short time. The company’s flagship production facility, located in Panagarh, West Bengal, has been operating above capacity, producing 1.47 million tonnes of urea in the financial year 2024–25. This output, achieved at over 115% of its rated capacity, earned the company the Fertiliser Association of India’s “Best Production Performance” Award for 2023–24.

The company currently commands about 20% of the urea market share in Eastern India. Its distribution network spans nine states and includes over 1,000 dealers and 60,000 retailers. This extensive reach allows the company to directly support farmers through the supply of essential crop nutrients. While its scale is considerable, its operations are also directed toward addressing localized agricultural needs—something that remains crucial in India’s highly diverse agro-climatic landscape.

Beyond Production: Looking Toward Balanced Growth

Although production figures and market share offer one view of the company’s success, Matix Fertilisers has also been focusing on broader issues such as soil health, sustainability, and farmer awareness. The organization’s product portfolio is gradually expanding to include more sustainable agro-input solutions that can help farmers adapt to changing environmental and economic conditions.

This holistic approach aligns well with IFA’s objectives, which aim to balance increased productivity with environmental responsibility. It’s this intersection—of production efficiency, farmer support, and ecosystem protection—that forms the core of many of IFA’s initiatives today. Kanodia’s perspectives, shaped by running a fertilizer company in a developing country, are expected to bring valuable insights into these discussions.

A Critical Time for Shared Responsibility and Fertilizer Policy and Practice

The backdrop to this appointment is a world grappling with competing demands—feeding a growing population while minimizing the environmental cost of food production. Fertilizers, though essential for high yields, have come under scrutiny for their environmental impacts when not used judiciously. This has led to growing calls for more balanced nutrient use, improved soil health practices, and greater reliance on localized agricultural knowledge.

In this evolving space, the IFA is increasingly taking on the role of not just an industry forum but also a thought leader advocating for responsible practices. Its global platform serves as a meeting point for sharing data, research, and policy ideas that can help harmonize global food systems with sustainable development goals.

As Nishant Kanodia steps into his new role with the IFA, the expectations are considerable—not just for representing India, but also for contributing to a broader dialogue on sustainable agriculture. His appointment is a recognition of the interlinked nature of global food systems, where actions in one region can have rippling effects elsewhere.

The task ahead is complex. But it is also one shared by many—from fertilizer manufacturers and farmers to policymakers and researchers. Through platforms like the IFA, there is an opportunity to bridge local insights with global strategies, aiming not just for higher yields, but for farming systems that can endure and adapt.
