Ecorobotix, a Swiss-based company focused on AI-driven precision agriculture, has announced the launch of its Lettuce Thinning algorithm, expanding the operational scope of its ARA Ultra High Precision (UHP) Sprayer. This update allows lettuce growers to conduct plant-by-plant thinning using the existing ARA platform, without the need for additional hardware or manual labor. The functionality is accessible through a software license subscription for current ARA users.
Automated Thinning Through AI-Based Precision
The new thinning capability targets one of the most labor-intensive processes in lettuce cultivation by replacing thinning crews with an automated, AI-enabled system. The ARA sprayer is equipped to evaluate individual plants and perform selective thinning based on pre defined spacing parameters. This mathematical precision ensures consistent plant spacing and uniform crop stands, reducing variability introduced by human labor.
The system operates autonomously and can be managed by a single operator. According to Ecorobotix, the ARA platform’s capacity to perform thinning tasks not only reduces labor costs but also significantly accelerates field coverage compared to traditional manual operations.
Multi-Functionality and Platform Integration
The thinning algorithm is designed to work as part of a broader suite of crop care functions supported by the ARA sprayer. In addition to thinning, the platform can also be deployed for weeding and other crop protection tasks. This multi-purpose utility provides growers with continuous, year-round value from the same equipment.
Ecorobotix has emphasized the ease of integration for this new feature. Existing users can activate the lettuce thinning function by subscribing to a license, with no need for physical modifications to the ARA unit. The interface remains consistent with previous versions, requiring minimal training or setup and maintaining usability across a range of operator skill levels.
AI-Driven Plant Recognition and Operational Efficiency
The new feature leverages Ecorobotix’s AI capabilities to perform true plant selection, distinguishing between lettuce crops and surrounding vegetation. This enables the algorithm to preserve the target plant consistently during the thinning process. The interface is designed for intuitive use, supporting seamless day to day operations in field conditions.

Katerina Lee, Regional Crop Care Manager at Ecorobotix, commented on the launch, stating that the combination of AI technology with the ARA platform’s precision addresses a key challenge for lettuce growers by eliminating the time and labor typically associated with thinning.
“This is a major milestone for our customers in the lettuce industry. We’ve combined the power of AI with the reliability of ARA’s ultra-high precision spraying platform to eliminate one of the most time-consuming and labor-intensive tasks in the field thinning.”
Strategic Alignment with Ecorobotix’s Development Path
The introduction of the lettuce thinning algorithm is aligned with Ecorobotix’s broader strategy to enhance operational efficiency and yield potential through plant level automation. The company has previously incorporated weeding and other autonomous crop care capabilities into the ARA platform, with the thinning function representing the latest extension of its software-driven approach to field management.
With this release, Ecorobotix continues to focus on scalable, in-field automation tools that aim to address constraints related to labor availability while maintaining precision in agricultural processes.
