Shunya Agritech, TRI Collaborate to Scale Hydroponic Fodder Access Through Rural Entrepreneurship

Shunya Agritech, an agritech startup, has entered into a strategic, non commercial collaboration with the Transform Rural India Foundation (TRI) with the aim of expanding the reach of hydroponic green fodder to villages across India. The partnership brings together Shunya’s zero soil, zero chemical hydroponic technology and TRI’s expansive grassroots presence to create a community driven approach to dairy fodder production and rural entrepreneurship.

Partnership Anchored in Local Empowerment

Transform Rural India Foundation, established in 2015, has been working across eight Indian states, spanning 42 districts and impacting over 20,000 villages. Its integrated development model, termed “Thoughtful Tarakki”, focuses on six core domains: Health & Nutrition, Income Prosperity, Education, Water & Sanitation, Local Governance and Gender Equity. This model is designed to facilitate the long term transformation of underdeveloped localities into thriving, self sustaining communities.

Shunya Agritech, which specializes in clean and space efficient hydroponic fodder cultivation systems, will work with TRI to identify underserved rural regions that can host Growth & Logistics Centers (GLCs). These GLCs will be operated by local entrepreneurs trained and supported by both organizations. The centers will serve as nodes for fodder production and distribution, ensuring consistent access to fresh, green feed for livestock without relying on traditional soil based farming or chemical inputs.

Field teams from Shunya and TRI will collaborate to mobilize rural communities. This will include leveraging local governance structures such as panchayats and engaging youth collectives to conduct awareness drives, facilitate live demonstrations of hydroponic systems and recruit motivated individuals to run the GLCs.

A Framework for Scale, Livelihoods and Data Driven Policy

The initiative sets out three core goals. First, the partners will work together to scale impact rapidly by utilizing TRI’s already established rural outreach network to introduce hydroponic fodder systems in new administrative blocks and gram panchayats. This strategy is intended to fast track implementation without the need to create new organizational infrastructure.

Second, the program aims to cultivate rural entrepreneurship by training young individuals to become “fodder entrepreneurs.” These individuals will not only operate the GLCs but also establish sustainable income generating enterprises that offer localized solutions to fodder availability, especially in fodder deficit regions.

Third, the collaboration seeks to build an evidence base that can support broader policy advocacy. Using IoT enabled dashboards and data collected directly from rural communities, the initiative will measure impact on key indicators such as milk yield improvement, cost savings on livestock feed, and additional social outcomes. These insights will be used to demonstrate the viability and benefits of hydroponic fodder systems, and to support efforts to integrate such models into larger policy frameworks and public programs.
