Advanced Food Irradiation Units

Agrotech companies have a key opportunity to enhance food safety and value addition through the establishment of multiproduct food irradiation units. As part of the Integrated Cold Chain & Value Addition Infrastructure scheme under Pradhan Mantri Kisan SAMPADA Yojana (PMKSY), the Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI) has invited private sector participation to modernize food processing infrastructure using advanced irradiation technology through an Expressions of Interest (EoI).

The focus is on modernizing and expanding India’s food processing infrastructure by leveraging advanced irradiation technology. Food irradiation, which uses ionizing radiation to eliminate bacteria, parasites, and pests, enhances the safety and extends the freshness of various food products.

This scheme offers financial assistance in the form of grants-in-aid or subsidies to eligible projects, encouraging investment in cutting-edge food processing technologies. Agrotech startups and established companies are poised to benefit from the establishment of these advanced facilities, which promise to:

  • Enhanced Food Safety: Food irradiation helps in improving the safety of food products by reducing microbial contamination.
  • Extended Shelf Life: The technology extends the shelf life of perishable products, reducing food waste and supporting market access.
  • Value Addition: The units will contribute to value addition in the food processing industry by integrating advanced technology.
  • Economic Growth: The scheme is expected to foster economic growth and create employment opportunities within the food processing sector.

The MoFPI is inviting prospective entrepreneurs to submit their Expressions of Interest for the establishment of these units. The EoI process will help identify stakeholders ready to invest in and manage these advanced food irradiation facilities. The last date for submission of EoI/ proposals is 21st September 2024.

The government’s latest initiative enhances food safety and supporting the growth of the food processing industry in India. By providing financial assistance and promoting modern technology, the Integrated Cold Chain & Value Addition Infrastructure scheme aims to create a more advanced food supply chain.
