India and Chile agreed to strengthen their collaboration in agricultural technology and sustainable farming practices, aiming to enhance productivity and address global challenges such as climate change and food security.
The commitment was solidified during a high-level meeting in New Delhi between Ramnath Thakur, India’s Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, and Esteban Valenzuela, Chile’s Minister for Agriculture. The discussions emphasized the exchange of best practices in crop diversification, organic farming, and agrotech innovations, paving the way for deeper bilateral cooperation in the agricultural sector.
Bilateral Cooperation and Knowledge Exchange
Ramnath Thakur highlighted India’s achievements in the agricultural sector, particularly in organic farming, agrotech innovations, and sustainable practices. He emphasized the importance of cooperation in tackling global challenges such as climate change, water management, and food security, which are critical to both countries.
Esteban Valenzuela, on his part, outlined Chile’s advancements in agricultural technology, particularly in precision farming and high-value crop production. He expressed Chile’s willingness to collaborate with India in these areas, potentially opening up new markets for Chilean agricultural products in India and vice versa.
Exploring India-Chile Market Access
Another key discussion area was the potential for increasing trade in agricultural commodities between India and Chile. The ministers discussed ways to enhance market access for their respective agricultural products, reduce trade barriers, and promote investments in the agriculture sector. This could include the exchange of technical know-how and joint research initiatives to develop resilient crop varieties and sustainable agricultural practices.
Both sides agreed on the need to foster a conducive environment for investment in the agri-business sector, focusing on value-added products and food processing. This collaboration is expected to create new opportunities for farmers and agribusinesses in both countries, helping them to achieve higher income levels and greater economic stability.
Several key challenges were identified that need to be addressed to enhance bilateral agricultural trade between India and Chile. Minister of State (MoS) Ramnath Thakur praised the shared perspectives between the two nations, highlighting that high-level visits and ongoing engagements have significantly strengthened their bilateral cooperation. He also reaffirmed India’s commitment to resolving sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) issues outlined in the existing Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
