ICAR-IARI Launches Agripreneurship Development Programme on Hybrid Vegetable Seed Production

The PUSA KRISHI under ICAR-IARI is organizing a specialized training program aimed at promoting agripreneurship in hybrid vegetable seed production, scheduled from December 9 to 14, 2024. The Agripreneurship Development Program (ADP) will offer participants in-depth knowledge and practical training to strengthen their expertise in the agricultural sector, with a focus on hybrid vegetable seed production.

Objective of the Agripreneurship Training

The program aims to address several key areas in the field of hybrid seed production, especially for vegetable crops. Participants will be introduced to the following core topics:

  • Hybrid Parental Lines and Male Sterility Mechanisms: A deep understanding of maintaining hybrid parental lines and various genetic mechanisms of male sterility in vegetable crops.
  • Hybrid Seed Production Skills: Enhancing the skills required for successful hybrid seed production, including controlled pollination, crop management, and seed processing.
  • Post-Harvest Handling and Quality Assurance: Educating participants on the techniques for post-harvest handling of seeds to ensure quality assurance, including cleaning, drying, sorting, and storage.
  • Regulatory Requirements and Intellectual Property Rights: Providing insight into the regulatory framework governing seed production, certification standards, and intellectual property rights concerning hybrid seed varieties.

Expected Outcomes for Agripreneurs

Agripreneurs will acquire in-depth knowledge and understanding of the principles, techniques, and best practices for varietal and hybrid seed production in vegetable crops. The training will cover the genetic mechanisms of male sterility in various vegetable crops, providing participants with the theoretical foundation to successfully engage in hybrid seed production. Practical skills will be developed through hands-on training in controlled pollination, crop management, seed processing, and quality assurance.

Participants will also learn essential post-harvest seed handling techniques, including cleaning, drying, sorting, and storage, along with quality control practices to ensure seed purity and viability. The training will prepare agripreneurs to create comprehensive business plans and effectively manage vegetable seed production ventures.

Future Food Livestock & Poultry Expo 2025

The program will familiarize participants with the regulations governing seed production, certification standards, and intellectual property rights related to hybrid seed varieties. By the end of the program, agripreneurs will be well-equipped with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills to launch and successfully run hybrid seed production businesses.

Ultimately, the training will empower agripreneurs to contribute to innovation, productivity, and sustainability within the agricultural sector, using the knowledge and skills gained to drive the growth of hybrid seed production ventures.
