BTC to Establish Urban Agriculture Farm and Market with $500K Grant

Pittsburgh (Pennsylvania)-based Bidwell Training Center (BTC) has received a US$ 500,000 Agricultural Innovation Grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture. The funding will support the creation of an urban agriculture farm and market, a project integrated into the center’s Horticulture and Agriculture Technology Program. This initiative aligns with the school’s broader educational and community objectives, aiming to increase local food production, supply fresh produce for culinary training, and provide agricultural workforce development.

Urban Farm and Market Project

The grant will facilitate the development of an on-site urban agriculture farm and market at BTC. This facility will serve as a practical training environment for students enrolled in the Horticulture and Agriculture Technology Program, equipping them with skills in both conventional and modern farming techniques. The farm will also serve a dual purpose by supplying fresh produce to BTC’s Culinary Arts Program, offering students access to locally grown ingredients as part of their training in food preparation and nutrition.

Beyond internal use, the project includes a wholesale distribution component. BTC plans to supply food from the urban farm to other educational institutions and community organizations. This aspect of the initiative is designed to expand access to affordable, locally sourced food, thereby contributing to food security efforts in the Pittsburgh region.

Addressing Local Food Supply Challenges

Currently, approximately 20 percent of the food consumed in Pittsburgh is sourced from California. As climate conditions in California increasingly disrupt agricultural output and rising transportation costs elevate food prices, Bidwell’s urban farm is positioned as a strategic response to these challenges. By increasing in-state production and reducing dependency on distant suppliers, BTC’s initiative seeks to support the local food infrastructure and mitigate vulnerabilities in the food supply chain.

Broader Context of the Grant Program

Bidwell Training Center’s project is part of a wider initiative by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, which recently awarded US$ 10 million in Agricultural Innovation Grants to 88 recipients across 45 counties. The program is intended to promote the adoption of sustainable agricultural practices, clean energy integration, and advanced technologies in farming operations. These grants are structured to reimburse recipients for costs related to project planning and execution, with the goal of improving the long-term sustainability and efficiency of Pennsylvania’s agricultural sector.

Dr. Kimberly Rassau, Vice President of Bidwell Training Center, acknowledged the importance of the grant in supporting BTC’s educational mission.

“Expanding the commonwealth’s access to healthy food systems requires an agricultural workforce that is well-trained in both traditional and next-generation farming techniques. Bidwell Training Center is extremely grateful to the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture for this Innovation Grant that will support our school’s commitment to innovation as we train our students to excel in the jobs of the future.”

Educational and Community Outcomes

The urban farm and market initiative is expected to generate multifaceted benefits. On the educational front, it will enhance BTC’s curriculum by offering experiential learning in sustainable agriculture, urban farming, and agri-technology—skills that are increasingly in demand across the state’s agriculture industry. From a community perspective, the project supports local food access and affordability, contributing to more resilient and self-reliant food systems in Pittsburgh and nearby areas.

With the Agricultural Innovation Grant, Bidwell Training Center aims to reinforce its role in education and community engagement through practical agricultural training and the promotion of local food sustainability.
