In a bold move to transform India’s agricultural landscape, the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) is set to develop 100 new farm technologies within the next 100 days. This ambitious initiative underscores the nation’s commitment to advancing agricultural practices through technological innovation.
A Technological Leap
During ICAR’s 96th Foundation and Technology Day celebrations — observed on 15-16 July — Director General Himanshu Pathak highlighted the organization’s dual-action plan: “100 new seed varieties in 100 days” and “100 technologies in 100 days.” Pathak revealed that these groundbreaking technologies will focus on areas such as climate-resilient farming, water management, mechanization, and plant protection.
ICAR’s robust team of 5,521 scientists nationwide is at the helm of this effort. These technologies are poised to address critical agricultural challenges, offering sustainable and efficient solutions to farmers across the country.
Key Innovations
ICAR’s planned technologies will span various facets of agriculture:
- Water Management: Advanced irrigation systems and water-saving techniques.
- Mechanization: New machinery and equipment to enhance farming efficiency.
- Plant Protection: Innovative methods to safeguard crops from pests and diseases.
Addressing Farm-Level Penetration
Acknowledging the need for wider adoption of ICAR’s high-yield seed varieties, Pathak announced the establishment of ‘seed hubs’ at ICAR institutions and Krishi Vigyan Kendras. This initiative aims to ensure that high-yield seed varieties reach farmers effectively. This year, particular emphasis is placed on creating seed hubs for advanced oilseeds and pulses.
Celebrating Innovation
During the 96th Foundation Day celebrations, ICAR showcased 40 innovative technologies developed in 2023. Pathak also disclosed plans to sign 10 MoUs for commercializing these innovations, with participation from around 100 industry players.
A Legacy of Innovation
Established as the Imperial Council of Agricultural Research on July 16, 1929, ICAR has been at the forefront of agricultural research and development. The organization’s five-year strategy outlines a comprehensive roadmap for continued innovation, with progress monitored meticulously at both institutional and headquarters levels.
Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan inaugurated the two-day celebrations, reaffirming the government’s support for ICAR’s pioneering efforts in transforming Indian agriculture through technological advancements.
