Hazera, BeeHero Collaborate to Enhance Pollinator Monitoring in Global Seed Production

Hazera Seeds, a global vegetable seed company under the Limagrain Group, and BeeHero, a developer of precision pollination technology, have announced a collaboration to evaluate BeeHero’s Pollination Insight Platform (PIP) across seed production fields worldwide. This partnership, built on several years of joint effort, seeks to improve pollination monitoring and efficiency through advanced technology.

The collaboration focuses on the deployment of BeeHero’s Pollination Insight Platform (PIP), a system designed to provide farmers with real-time, actionable data on pollination activity. According to Avi Gabai, Production Research Manager at Hazera, this initiative stems from their shared goal to address one of agriculture’s critical challenges: effective pollination. Gabai emphasized the importance of this partnership, noting that BeeHero’s technology has demonstrated its potential to improve pollination efficiency, hive quality, and tackle the pressing issue of bee colony loss since their initial collaboration began in 2019.

Pollination plays a vital role in agriculture, as per FAO approximately 75% of major food crops rely on pollinators, particularly honeybees. For seed production, where crop yield and quality are paramount, the need for efficient pollination is even more pressing. However, modern pollination practices face significant obstacles, including declining bee populations and weakened hives. This collaboration aims to address these issues and optimize resource use in seed production.

The PIP system utilizes IoT sensors placed in seed fields to collect extensive data on pollinator activity, flower visits, and environmental conditions. This information is processed using artificial intelligence to provide farmers with insights for improving pollination efficiency. Traditionally, such data was collected manually and inefficiently. By automating this process, PIP offers a significant leap forward in productivity and sustainability.

In addition to its field-based sensors, PIP complements BeeHero’s existing in-hive sensors, further enhancing the scope of data available for analysis. This integrated approach allows farmers to monitor bee activity, pollination distribution, and environmental factors in real time, empowering them to make informed decisions to maximize seed yield and quality.

Initial Focus Areas and Future Plans

Currently, the collaboration is focused on monitoring seed production fields in Israel and France, with plans to extend the initiative to other regions in upcoming seasons. These efforts aim to evaluate bee activity patterns, pollination distribution, and hive behavior throughout the day. By leveraging these insights, farmers can enhance pollination efficiency and achieve more consistent crop performance.

Omer Davidi, CEO and Co-Founder of BeeHero, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership. He highlighted the integration of Hazera’s extensive seed production expertise with BeeHero’s sensor technology and AI-based analytics, emphasizing the potential for this collaboration to deliver measurable improvements in crop yield and quality while promoting sustainable farming practices.

Hazera and BeeHero’s Sustainable Agricultural Practices

The collaboration between BeeHero and Hazera combines advanced technology with deep agricultural expertise to drive sustainable farming practices. By enhancing bee health and improving resource efficiency, this partnership aims to optimize crop production. Feedback from growers highlights how BeeHero’s data-driven insights have provided valuable support for beekeepers and farmers, helping them refine their methods and potentially boost overall yield. The use of BeeHero’s technology is expected to increase seed yield and reduce yield volatility through advanced remote monitoring of pollination activity.

As part of the Limagrain Group, Hazera is committed to promoting innovative agricultural methods on a global scale. The partnership with BeeHero represents a significant step forward in improving pollination efficiency, advancing agricultural practices and enhancing bee health.
